The brand-new pump was recently revealed to the local community in Manicaland, and will provide fresh drinking water to families in the area.
WHAT A WATER COOLER!
Staying hydrated during the working day helps to improve concentration, increase energy, and generally keeps the body in healthy order. At Nyland and Beattie, we wanted to invest in the wellbeing of our staff by helping them to reach their recommended daily water intake. So, when we found out about a local water supplier that would donate a percentage of each water bottle we bought to charity, we were delighted to have the chance to help even more people outside of our office too.
We chose to install a mains fed water cooler from AquAid Liverpool to our offices on Albert Road in Widnes. Since then our team have been enjoying freshly dispensed cold water whilst donating to African charities at the same time.
ABOUT AQUAID
AquAid supply water coolers and water to commercial and domestic settings, and each year AquAid automatically donates £20 for every mains fed water cooler they have installed.
The money raised from water cooler installation and maintenance is shared annually with charities Christian Aid and The Africa Trust to build water pumps in Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Uganda. The funds raised from one mains fed water dispenser is equivalent to bringing fresh drinking water to four children in villages and towns throughout Africa. Since they started, AquAid have donated over £12 million which is estimated to have helped around 2 million people to date.
And with our solicitor firm’s long-term use of AquAid services, this year a brand-new elephant water pump was constructed on Nyland and Beattie’s behalf. The pump is located in Manicaland, a province in the northeastern highlands of Zimbabwe, and features our name displayed on the pump housing. This will mean that another town can now benefit from clean drinking water for many years to come.
WHAT IS AN ELEPHANT PUMP?
The ‘Elephant Pump’ is a cost-effective water pump, based on a modernised design of an ancient Chinese rope pulley system to retrieve water from an underground source. Each pump is built using local materials, and they are more reliable and user-friendly than other versions. The Africa Trust fund the construction of elephant pumps to provide communities in countries across Africa with sustainable drinking water solutions.
An elephant pump can easily provide up to 10,000 litres of safe drinking water per day for upwards of 300 people for decades.
Elephant Pumps are built by an experienced Africa Trust team leader, with the assistance of the local community. This allows for the community too to more easily repair the pump should they need to, which also helps to extend the life of the pump.
We’re happy knowing that our healthy habits have helped to improve access to quality drinking water for others, and we hope that we’ll be able to contribute to the building of more wells in future.
